I’m Peter Mathis. I made wine at Ravenswood for more than 20 years. Mathis Vineyard, in the hills above Sonoma Valley, is my “old school” project. Here I cleared the land more than twenty years ago and planted mostly Grenache, with some Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet.
I grow it. I make it.
Grenache is my passion. In fact, my signature grenache wine just received the highest medal awarded to an American wine (gold) at the 11th Annual International Competition Grenache du Monde, among 800 worldwide grenache entries. It also earned 96 points and double-gold this spring at the Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge.
My Rosé de Grenache, grown from my vines, was introduced about a dozen years after my grenache wine launched. It's received numerous accolades and awards, including 98 points (and Best in Class/Double Gold) at the 2024 Experience Rosé Wine Competition.
Überblendl, made from the same grapes and same estate vineyard, was introduced a bit later. But it comprises an entirely different blend of Petite Sirah, Grenache, Carignane and Alicante Bouschet. It too has picked up numerous accolades, including double-gold medals and mid-90s scores from various competitions and publications.
Is Grenache your passion? I encourage you to give it a try. It's a joyful wine, sure to put a smile on your face! Cheers!
By the way, we've just opened the box office for our November 2nd Winemaker Dinner (or click on EVENTS in the menu) to be held at Suite D. I hope you can join us!
